Thorbjørnsen had achieved a lot by the time she put the brakes on her business. Born in Oslo, she studied fashion in Denmark before moving to England. There she focused on fine arts and then enrolled at Central Saint Martins. Under the tutelage of the late Louise Wilson, the designer earned her BA, and in 2012, her Master’s degree. Thorbjørnsen set up her business—or practice, as she prefers to put it—in the UK, but priced out by the rents she returned to Norway in 2015. “It was quite random,” she recalls of the move. “I wasn’t sure it was going to work for me, but, uh, it did work quite well”—until the day that it didn’t.
